The City of Westwood has approved Resolution No. 138-2024 calling for a special mail ballot election to be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
All Westwood voters who are registered in an active status, at least 30-days prior to the election will automatically receive a ballot in the mail, starting on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. If you are a registered voter and you have not received your ballot yet, apply for a replacement ballot here.
Ballots can be tricky. Do we know the wording of the question?
According to the Johnson County Election Office, the question on the ballot for Westwood voters is:
Shall the following be adopted?
“whether the Joe D. Dennis Park shall be sold, traded, or exchanged”
☐Yes
☐No
If you, like us, do not want the park to be sold and turned into a multi-storied, multi-building complex, we urge you to VOTE NO.
It's a vote-by-mail ballot. How does that even work?
You'll receive a ballot in the mail mid-March. Instructions on how to complete your ballot can be found on the Johnson County Election Office site. For your vote to count, the Johnson County Election Office must receive your vote no later than 12-noon on April 1st. You can mail it in, but you'll want to mail it as early as you can (at least 7 days) to make sure your vote is received and counts. The other options are to drop your ballot in 1 of 8 drop box locations (the closest to Westwood is the Johnson County Northeast Offices at 6000 Lamar Ave in Mission) or walk it into the Johnson County Election Office personally. If you walk it in, make sure you get a "receipt," if you will, for confirmation that your vote will count.
Returning your ballot early is important as they are due in a county drop box by noon on April 1st. According to the Special Elections section found on the Johnson County Election Office site:
- If returning in person: the ballot must be returned by 12:00-noon on election day to any drop box within the county, or to the county election office.
- If returning by mail: the ballot must be returned by 12:00-noon on election day to the county election office.
(Postmark and three-day grace period does not apply K.S.A. 25-433(b))
Are there any special rules to follow when filling out the ballot?
YES! There are a few requirements to allow your ballot to be counted:
- You must use BLACK INK to fill out the ballot
- You must COMPLETELY FILL IN THE OVAL to the left of your choice
- You must SIGN in the box and DATE the return envelope
- You must print your ADDRESS on the return envelope
Are YOU registered to vote?
If you live in Westwood and need to register, you can easily do that online here. Voter registration closes 21-days prior to the April 1, 2025 election day (in this case, March 10, 2025); applications must be postmarked no later than the 21st day prior to any election to be eligible to vote.
(Side Note: If you register within 30-days before Election Day (in this case, March 1, 2025), but before the Voter Registration deadline, which is 21-days before Election Day (again, March 10), you must apply for a mail ballot using a Replacement Mail Ballot Form provided by the Election Office. The deadline for such requests is the three days prior to the Election Day, or the Friday prior to a Tuesday election, which means the deadline is March 28, 2025.)
